Fatal Motorcycle Crash on State Route 45 / North Bend Road


Saybrook Township, Ashtabula County - The Ashtabula Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle crash on State Route 45 and North Bend Road. The crash occurred on October 20th, 2017 at approximately 12:50 PM. The intersection has yellow flashing lights for north and southbound traffic on State Route 45 and red flashing lights with stop signs for east and westbound traffic on North Bend Road. A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound on State Route 45. A 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan was westbound on North Bend Road.


The 2002 Dodge failed to yield at the stop sign and red flashing lights pulling into the intersection. The 2009 Harley Davidson struck the 2002 Dodge as he was driving northbound.


The 2009 Harley Davidson was driven by 64 year old Ronald A. Russo of Poland, Ohio.


He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Mr. Russo was transported from the scene by Saybrook Township EMS and taken to Ashtabula County Medical Center with serious injuries. He was then flown from Ashtabula County Medical Center to University Hospitals in Cleveland. Once there, Mr. Russo succumbed to the injuries he sustained as a result of the crash.


The 2002 Dodge was driven by 48 year old Josephine N. Palmer of Northfield, Ohio. Mrs. Palmer was not injured from the crash. Mrs. Palmer was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.


The passengers of the 2002 Dodge were 55 year old Michael D. Mitchell and 57 year old Carol Mitchell of Geneva, Ohio. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were not injured in the crash. They were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.


Alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash.


This crash remains under investigation.
