Two vehicle crash closes
Interstate 76 for hours
Palmyra Township - Troopers from the Ravenna Patrol Post are investigating a two vehicle crash that occurred on IR 76 just east of SR 225 late Tuesday night. The crash occurred at approximately 10:05 PM.
Units #1 and #2 were both traveling east on IR 76. Unit #1, a FedEx truck pulling double trailers, was in the left lane. Unit #2, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, was in the right lane. The crash occurred when the FedEx truck attempted to change lanes and struck the Impala causing the rearmost FedEx trailer to overturn. The tractor and first trailer stayed upright. All vehicles came to rest off the right side of the road.
The driver of the Chevy Impala, a 29 year old Trumbull County woman, was transported to St. Elizabeths Hospital by Palmyra EMS for medical treatment. Her condition is currently unknown.
The overturned semi-trailer was hauling volatile chemicals. Some chemicals were released when the trailer overturned. IR 76, eastbound lanes, were shut down for approximately 5 hours. Palmyra Fire Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Portage County Emergency Management Agency, EPA, and Jeswalds Towing all assisted with clearing the scene.
The driver of the semi, a 43 year old Massillon man, was cited for failure to stay within marked lanes.
