Fatal Crash on US 322 Involving Horse

 

 

Williamsfield Township, Ashtabula County - The Ashtabula Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one vehicle crash involving a deceased horse in the roadway on US 322 near mile post 23. The crash occurred on September 17"', 2017 at approxilnately 0453 hours. A 2006 Ford F-250 was traveling eastbound on US 322 when it came upon a dead horse in the roadway. The Ford swerved in an attempt to avoid the horse and lost control. The Ford struck the horse and then overturned coming to rest on its roof in the roadway. It is unclear how the horse became deceased in the roadway.

 

The 2006 Ford was driven by 23 year old Justin C. Alkire of Niles, Ohio. Mr. Alkire succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

 

The passenger of the vehicle was a 16 year old juvenile from Williamsfield, Ohio. The passenger was taken by his parents to Mercy Health, St. Joseph's of Andover, Ohio with minor injuries. He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

 

Alcohol and speed may have been a factor in the crash.

 

This crash remains under investigation.
